Massage therapy is a hands-on manual therapy using soft tissue manipulation and gentle joint mobilizations. It is most commonly used to prevent, recover, and relieve pain while enhancing physical function, promoting health, and relieving stress. Research has shown that therapeutic massage is effective for the treatment of acute and overuse injuries, syndromes, and stress. It can be used for spine pain, limb pain, joint pain, pulled muscles, and headaches. At Rehab Hero, RMTs specialize in massages that penetrate into the tissue for lasting relief.
During your first appointment, you will meet your RMT to complete a history assessment so they can understand how you got injured. From there a physical assessment will follow that will be used to determine your treatment plan. They may test your range of motion, muscle tests, or orthopedic tests depending on your injury. Once you have given your consent to treatment, your therapist will give you time to change if needed and treatment will begin.
With our massage therapists, you can expect rehab or prehab exercises, ergonomic advice, joint mobilizations in addition to traditional massage. This includes performance optimization, maintenance care and acute pain recovery. Rehab Hero Massage therapists work closely with the rest of the healthcare team, communicating directly with your medical doctor, chiropractor, or physiotherapist on your request. Using personalized treatment techniques our therapists provide options suitable for everyone.

Deep tissue massage is used to relieve muscle trigger points and adhesions that can decrease circulation, increase pain, and decrease motion. It helps muscle pain by reducing inflammation-related pain caused by conditions like tendinitis. This will decrease muscle tension and improve muscle recovery. Just like your first workout, know that it is typical to feel muscle soreness over 1-3 days following treatment.
Unlike a spa massage or Thai massage, sport massage aims to improve your movement and performance. Although created to help athletes, a sedentary person can also benefit from a sports massage. It uses massage with movement and stretching techniques to recruit your muscles for a therapeutic effect. Similar to deep tissue massage, it is common to experience muscle soreness over 1-3 days following your first treatment. The relief afterwards make it easy to fall in love with this treatment style.
Cupping originates from Ancient Chinese techniques that increases blood flow and relieves muscle tension by pulling on fascia. The suction from the cup causes blood to move to the surface to promote circulation, which causes a dark purple or red circular mark after treatment that lasts from a few days to a week.
Scraping is slang for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). This technique uses a massage tool to create fascial movement and blood circulation. Like cupping, bruising or redness does occur and may last for a few days after treatment. This technique can also be used for tissues that are tough to massage like tendons or ligaments.
Myofascial Release Therapy (MRT) refers to the treatment of muscles and fascia together. Fascia is the connective tissue surrounding muscle bellies to hold them intact (much like a sheath). When limited, fascia can decrease range of motion and lead to movement compensations and pain.
Trigger point therapy is used to treat myofascial referral pain. Trigger Point therapy includes sustained deep pressure to muscles and fascia to help reduce muscular tension. The more accurate the trigger point therapy is, the better the results will be.
Joint mobilization uses passive movement of a joint which provides a therapeutic effect, decreases pain and increases range of motion. This technique can be used for all joints of the body including the hands, knees, hips, back and neck.
Certified massage therapists can use medical acupuncture and electroacupuncture for improved pain relief and physical function. Fine solid needles are inserted into anatomical structures and may be stimulated with electricity to achieve therapeutic results. This can be done in during regular massage therapy treatments in addition to the aforementioned massage techniques.
